INTRODUCTION TO CHEMISTRY
The Meaning of Chemistry
- Chemistry is the study of materials and substance of the world and the chemical changes of matter
- Knowledge of chemistry contributes to the development of chemical-based industries in agriculture, food processing, petroleum and medicine.
Scientific Investigation
- A scientific method involves a series of carefully planned steps done systematically based on the rules and principles of science to solve problem experimentally
- Usually, an experiment which involve scientific method follows a sequence of well planned steps as listed below;
a) Making observation
b) Making inference
c) Identifying the problem
d) Proposing a hypothesis
e) Identifying variable
f) Controlling variable
g) Planning the experiment
h) Collecting data
i) Analyzing and interpreting data
j) Drawing a conclusion
k) Write a report
- There are three types of variable involved in an experiment
a) Manipulation variable: A situation or condition that is intentionally manipulated or changed in order to observe its relationship with the responding variable
b) Responding variable: The dependent variable that changes according to the changes of the manipulated variable. A responding variable is recorded as the data of the experiment.
c) Fixed variable: Situation or condition that are fixed and intentionally kept under control
The Scientific Attitudes and Noble Value
- With the development of scientific attitudes and noble values while conducting scientific investigation, the younger generations of scientists are more inclined to become critical, inquisitive, open-minded, fair and competent citizens.
Exercise
- The higher the temperature of water is, the higher the solubility of salt is
Describe an experiment to prove the above statement. Your answer should
include the following
a) Aim of experiment
b) Hypothesis of experiment
c) List all variable involved
d) List of apparatus and chemicals
e) Procedure of experiment
f) Tabulation of result
